Puppies are 5 days old today and everyone is gaining weight and doing well.  They’re now nursing with greater animation and are moving more vigorously than ever.  Mattie continues to settle into her mom role, more relaxed with nursing and cleaning her pups.  She still doesn’t want them to be too far away, but is now able to rest when the puppies are sleeping (vs. pacing around and checking on them every minute or two)!

Tiny (pink collar, though she isn’t wearing one) provides us with some laughs, luckily just caught in time on iPhone!

Everyone continuing to do well today, and Mattie is becoming more relaxed  as a new mom.  Puppies are less than 48 hours old in this video.  Time to grow!

A few photos as Mattie awaits her surgery today that begins at 2:30pm (check in at 1pm).  Not looking too big, so we are guessing that the ultrasound was likely correct in terms of numbers.  We’re anticipating a small but mighty litter today.  We’ve felt some movement over the last few days, so fingers crossed all are healthy.

Time for setting up the whelping box and teaching Mattie to go inside (and eventually, to relax there)!  Initially, she behaves like it is just another training game, but quickly figures out it’s just a place we’re hanging out.  Still, she keeps wondering what’s up…such weird behavior from us!  Finally, she starts to “nest,” rearranging blankets and later, a few towels we added.  Hooray! Things are moving in the right direction!

We are pleased with the wonderful news that Mattie appears to be carrying some puppies!!!

Her Ultra Sound yesterday revealed a potential four puppies.  We are thrilled of course but remain reserved because we know that anything can happen with canine pregnancy and puppies.

We have all paws crossed that everyone will survive and thrive.

The time is slooooowly winding down towards May 8th, when we will finally have Mattie’s ultra sound and an indication of whether or not we have hopes of a litter.

If results are positive, we can expect a birth date around June 8th.

If birthing and rearing go well, puppies would be ready for new homes on August 5-6th.

Stay tuned and keep all paws crossed for good news on May 8th. The appointment is late in the afternoon, so expect a posting early evening.
