3 weeks old! (photos)

Puppies are 3 weeks old and doing well.  They’re walking and sitting a lot, though still having fun falls that never cease to make us laugh.  Teeth are coming in and today they got their first taste of gruel (soaked and smashed up puppy food with some water, esbilac and canned food mixed in).  Play is more prevalent than just a few days ago, and vocalizations are also increasing and we are hearing growls and barks and moans.

Visit our gallery for photos of each puppy on their three week birthday, the beginning of their fourth week of life!

First Play Sign (photos + video)

June 25, 2017

It is day 19.  Two weeks & four days old marks the first time the puppies exhibited using their mouths in play.  Prior, the puppies did a lot of leaning and pushing, most often in a circular pattern, with each head over the other’s back.

They were also walking significantly better than yesterday!

Thanks to Ben Sound for the music.

Big Eyes! (photo)

We can see little bits of everyone’s eyes, but Mr. Green is showing the most so far.

Have a peek at some additional photos from this afternoon as well…Bertha put on a bit of a show with a great yawn!

Mr. Green: here’s looking at you (except I can’t see anything)

Two Weeks Old Today (photo)

Today is their second week birthday, and the day which marks the beginning of their third week of life.  Orange has a tiny eye opening, and Green has an almost fully black nose.  All are standing and starting to take a step or two before tumbling and rolling.  Mattie continues to be a super mom, so incredibly patient with her pups and ever on the alert for their squeaks.

Scent Socialization (video)

Our aim, demonstrated in this video, is to begin the socialization process slightly early by providing a plethora of novel scents to predispose the puppies towards being comfortable with novel people as a norm in their world.  Much more will be required as they grow and develop, but this is an excellent early start.

Eyes and ears aren’t open yet, so we are taking advantage of the puppy’s isolated sense of smell. Thanks to several wonderful donors, beginning on day 9 we are introducing novel scents on items worn for multiple days by our volunteers. Most are male donors, with some women as well, and we were fortunate to also receive some child and baby scented items.

Yes, it does seem that the puppies may be trying to nurse on the shirt, but they are still smelling it, and even though the scent of mom passes by, they continue to investigate the shirt.

We can’t thank our donors enough for stinking up their stuff and handing it over in sealed bags for our use.  Mucho Gracias.

Papa Pyro (video)

Pyro is a super sweet and pro social boy.  In this video you’ll see how he is with me, even though he’s only met me once before.  I took him out of his crate and away from his people at the National specialty, and this is how he was.

Week Two (photos)

The puppies are now at the start of their second week.  Everyone is thriving and moving more every day.  Pigment is coming in and you can see it in the closer shots on their noses.  Visit the gallery for today’s photos!
